Breakout Session 4 – WORKSHOP: From Estimates to Evidence – Practical Tools for Calculating Student and Faculty Workload

March 4 | 1:50 pm - 3:10 pm

Presenters:
Sam Farkas (UC Law SF)
Rebecca Purdom (New Hampshire)

This hands-on workshop will provide direct experience and tools calculating time-on-task for course workloads for both students and faculty/graders.

PRE-CONFERENCE PREPARATION: Participants are invited to bring –

  • Course syllabus, or, if an online course, the course map. For most courses, we will focus on 3-4 weeks or modules of materials, not the entire semester.
  • Course materials and readings – not just titles, but actual page lengths and materials. We will cover how to evaluate materials according to the Rice University course workload calendar, and how to use that evaluation to calculate student time-on-task.
  • Assignments and assessments. We will cover how to evaluate the time it will take students to complete an assignment, and how long it will take faculty to grade that work.

  • What you will get out of this session
: The session will conclude with a discussion of how time-on-task and grading calculators can inform broader program needs, including faculty workload planning, course evaluation and review, accommodations management, and accreditation documentation. By the end, attendees will have both the tools and the strategies needed to integrate workload analysis into program design and oversight.
